Saigon: Police arrest journalist Pham Chi Dung

CTV Danlambao - Translated by Như Ngọc - Pham Chi Dung, president of the Independent Journalists Association of Vietnam (IJAVN), was arrested by police in Saigon on the morning of June 25, 2015 and detained at an unknown location.

His arrest is confirmed by Thuy My, a journalist from RFI.

"At three o'clock in the morning in Paris, 8 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2015 in Vietnam, Thuy My received a mere three-word message: "I was arrested". Then it was a brief call from Mr. Pham Chi Dung saying when he left his home this morning, about twenty people forcibly forced him to follow them. He sounded very calm," wrote Thuy My on her blog.

Attempts to call journalist Pham Chi Dung’s cell phone have failed.

In recent days, police have sent Dung summons three times questioning the contents “of articles related to Nguyen Quang Lap.”

Under communist law, a person failed to respond a police summon three times can be coerced. This provides police powerful tool to carry out harassment and arbitrary arrest against dissidents.

The crackdown took place just hours after the media reports that the U.S. Senate gave Barack Obama 'fast-track' authority over TPP trade deal negotiations.
